Kentmere

Project: Kentmere Youth Facility

Client: Blackburn & Darwen Borough Council

Architect/QS: Capita Symonds

Location: Kentmere Valley, Lake District

Value: £730k

Duration: 38 weeks

Contract: JCT 2005

The works included demolition and comprehensive alterations to the existing buildings to provide refurbished accommodation and a new build barracks, within the Lake District National Park and a Site of Specific Scientific Interest.

The isolated location and sensitive surroundings provided many challenges throughout the seasons and the site was accessible only by a rough and narrow farm track.  Fully utilising the specialist in-house skills of Team Northern Construction, local materials were used to deliver a high quality product considerate to the aesthetics of the natural environment and with minimal disruption to the operation of the nearby farm and the enjoyment of the many fellwalkers and cyclists.

Power is provided by a bespoke diesel generator and battery cell system, with the site water supply drawn directly from the natural spring within the hillside (retrieval of which involved a minor diving expedition).

The site is regularly used by the children of Blackburn and Darwen and is also available for hire by the public for those wishing to partake in outdoor activities.
